The football and cheerleading programs have certification requirements for coaches. See below for specific requirements.
Cheerleading
Attendance is mandatory for cheerleading coach and all assistant coaches at the coach’s meetings conducted by the area director, as well as the applicable Coach’s Instructional Seminars annually. Failure to attend meetings and seminars will result in loss of coaching privileges.
Coach seminars will be held as follows:
Saturday, May 7 - Shawnee Mission West High School, 8800 W. 85th Street
Saturday, June 11 - Shawnee Mission South High School, 5800 W. 107th Street
Saturday, July 9 - Shawnee Mission South High School, 5800 W. 107th Street
The full session seminar will be held from 9 am to 1 pm each day. The refresher seminar will be held from 12 to 2 pm. NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO AUGUST SEMINAR IN 2011 SO PLAN ACCORDINGLY TO ATTEND THE APPROPRIATE SESSION IN MAY, JUNE OR JULY.

Football
General. Those individuals who are interested in being a head or assistant coach during the 2011 FCCJC football programs - spring flag, fall tackle or fall flag - must complete a 2011 application form and be approved by the appropriate FCCJC authority as provided in the rulebook. Individuals may not participate in practices of games until their application has been approved. (Form available on website under Coaches Corner tab.)
Certification Program. While all coaches are encouraged to be certified, the head coach and at least one assistant coach for each team in the flag or tackle program must complete the club’s certification program. At least one certified coach must be in attendance at every practice and game. To be certified, a coach must do the following:
- Flag Program (Grades K-3). Attend the Flag Coaches Orientation Clinic and participate in one Coaches Development Clinic.
- Tackle Program (Grades 2-8). Attend one Tackle Coaches Orientation Clinic, which includes a Concussion/Injury Management Seminar and, for coaches who have less than four (4) years FCCJC coaching experience in tackle football, participate in one Coaches Development Clinic.
Education and Training. Opportunities for coaches to improve their abilities to teach and coach football in the FCCJC program are as follows:
- Coaches Kits. All head coaches – tackle and flag – are provided a coaching kit that includes a first aid kit, footballs, rulebooks and other supplementary equipment. The contents of these kits are provided in part by Dick’s Sporting Goods and OPRMC.
- Coaches Orientation Clinics.
o Flag Program. The flag coaches orientation and development clinic is scheduled for 9-11:30 am, Saturday, August 27 in the SM South High School Cafeteria. Topics to be covered will include: Team assignments; program objectives; operations and rules; sportsmanship; first aid and injury management; coaches responsibilities; equipment checkout; playing time; and overall team management.
o Tackle Program. The tackle coaches orientation clinic will cover: game operations; rules and officials; sportsmanship; coaches responsibilities; practice issues; playing time and overall team management. A Concussion/Injury Management Seminar will be part of the orientation clinic and presented by our concussion management partner, OPRMC. It will provide information to coaches on what symptoms to look for in a concussion and how to treat it or other injuries. All tackle program orientation clinics will be held in the auditorium at SM South High School, 5800 W. 107th, at the time noted below.

- Coaches Development Clinics.
o Flag Program. Areas to be covered include: practice planning: team and individual drills; teaching skills and techniques; offensive and defensive schemes; theories of teaching young players. Clinicians will include experienced youth coaches.
o Tackle Program. Areas to be covered include: practice planning; team and individual drills; teaching skills and techniques; offensive and defensive schemes; training and conditioning; theories of teaching and motivation. Clinicians will include college, high school and experienced youth coaches.

Saturday, July 23, MidAmerica Nazarene University, 12-2pm, Cook Center-Hagar Room (no charge); Flag and Tackle Sessions.
Tuesday, August 9, MidAmerica Nazarene University, 6-8pm, Cook Center-Hagar Room (no charge); Flag and Tackle Sessions.
Saturday, August 27, SMS High School Cafeteria, 9-11:30 am (no charge); Flag Only Session, combined with orientation session.
