FCCJC Focused on Helmet Safety
Each year the FCCJC equipment staff and representatives of Riddell, our helmet manufacturer, inspect every helmet at the end of the football season. Any helmets with hairline cracks or other damage are removed from our inventory. Riddell recommends reconditioning and recertifying helmets every three years due to the ages of our participants. We will accelerate the reconditioning of individual helmets to be done more often if it is warranted. Each year, the club ships 800 to 1,400 helmets to Riddell’s factory in Ohio for reconditioning and over 200 helmets are removed from inventory due to age or condition. No helmet made available to a participant is more than 10 years old.
Our equipment staff is at Heritage Park Football on game days and is available during the week if helmets should require repair or replacement during the season. During the off season, all helmets are cleaned with high pressure water hoses and all chin straps and jaw pads are steamed cleaned. Please feel free to contact FCCJC equipment manager, Debbie Koenigsdorf, with any questions relating to our equipment. She can be reached by email at debbie@fccjc.org or by phone at 913/645-1787.
FCCJC and Overland Park Regional Medical Center Partner on Concussion Management Program
The Football and Cheerleading Club of Johnson County is establishing a voluntary Concussion Management Program beginning with the 2011 fall season for participants in the FCCJC tackle football program in grades 5 through 8 and the cheer program in grades 6 through 8.
"We are excited to have OPRMC as our Official Partner in developing and administering the new FCCJC Concussion Management Program," said Mark Lambeth, chairman of the FCCJC Executive Board of Directors. "We appreciate their support in providing the baseline testing component of this important new program for our participants."
The purpose of the baseline testing program is to establish a neurological baseline for FCCJC participants that can be compared with brain activity following a concussion. This will assist the medical clinician in evaluating the effects of the concussion and in determining when a participant can safely return to participating in practice and games.
